About the Tour

Urban Orchard turned seven acres of former industrial land between the LA River and the 710 freeway into a park that captures and cleans stormwater, grows fruit for the community, and offers green jobs for local youth, among other community benefits. This tour is hosted in partnership with the City of South Gate, Conservation Corps of Long Beach, and Trust for Public Land, the team that made the project happen.

Students, youth groups, and anyone curious about how projects like this get built are welcome. No background in water or the Safe Clean Water Program needed.

What We’ll Explore

  • Stormwater on a former brownfield – how the park’s wetland captures and cleans runoff from the LA River, and what it took to build on a formerly contaminated site
  • The community story – how South Gate residents shaped the vision for the park
  • Workforce development and maintenance – meet the Conservation Corps of Long Beach crews who help operate and maintain the park
  • Art and culture – including the Tongva-inspired playground and other cultural elements woven into the design
  • Partnerships and funding – how the Safe Clean Water Program and partners came together, and how your community can do the same
  • Fruit picking – wrap up with a chance to pick fruit from the orchard, subject to availability

Who Should Attend?

Open to everyone, with a focus on youth and community members from the Lower LA River watershed. Space is limited, so please register.
